Mangrove Restoration Project

At Hector A. Cafferata JR. K-8 School, we believe in hands-on learning that empowers students to make a difference in their world. Through a special partnership with Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), our students are taking action to protect Florida's fragile coastal ecosystems one mangrove at a time.

Throughout the school year, students will care for and nurture 100 mangrove plants while learning about the mangrove life cycle and the critical role these plants play in coastal conservation.

At the end of the year, our fifth-grade students will leave their mark on Florida’s coastal shores by planting the mangroves their school community has nurtured throughout the year

Garden Project

At Hector A. Cafferata Jr. K-8 School, our Garden Project transforms the campus into a living laboratory for sustainability. Students take full ownership of our garden, mastering everything from soil science and composting to the rhythm of planting seasons. By observing these life cycles firsthand, they learn how individual choices directly impact food security and the health of our planet.

Supported by the prestigious Grassroots Gro More Good grant, we are successfully integrating sustainable agriculture into our core academic framework. This project empowers students to manage resources with a disciplined, scientific mindset, equipping them with the technical literacy needed to tackle future environmental challenges. As they cultivate the land, they are simultaneously cultivating the leadership skills required for a greener tomorrow.
